Savings check: typical cost traps in practice marketing
Before a practice puts more money into marketing, it is worth looking at what is already running. The savings check assesses nine typical expenses: can go, rework, check, measure first or clarify.
Savings check: typical cost traps in practice marketing
Tick what is running in your practice today. You will see which typical items you should cut, rework or measure first.
- Can go: paid listings in business directoriesUsually unnecessary. The free listings on Google, Bing and the major portals are enough, as long as name, address and opening hours are identical everywhere.
- Rework: an SEO report with rankings but no number of enquiriesUnnecessary in this form. Rankings are losing significance because of AI Overviews. Ask for enquiries and appointments per channel, otherwise you are paying for statistics.
- Rework: social media posts to a schedule, without a clear goalPause or refocus: on staff recruitment or awareness, with a figure you measure it against. Regular posting alone does not bring in patients.
- Check: ads in newspapers or city magazinesCheck whether you can trace a single enquiry back to them. If not, the budget is usually better spent on measurable channels.
- Rework: lots of short service pages with only a few sentencesDo not delete, merge: one detailed page per treatment with procedure, costs and questions. AI Overviews now answer what short pages cover by themselves.
- Check: premium profile on a doctor rating portalOnly worthwhile if it brings in appointments. Count the bookings from the last six months and divide the price by that number.
- Measure first: Google or Meta ads without counting enquiriesDo not switch them off, but measure first. Without a figure per campaign, you do not know which euro brings in patients and which does not.
- Check: a new logo, even though patients know the old oneUsually unnecessary, as long as the existing one is clean and recognisable. A consistent presence across website, profile and practice sign tends to have more impact.
- Clarify: website or ad accounts are registered to the agency, not the practiceDo not cancel straight away, but clarify which logins and data belong to you. Otherwise any later switch becomes expensive.

How the tool calculates
The assessment is based on what we see in practices again and again: paid listings nobody finds, reports without enquiries, ads without measurement. We deliberately do not give amounts, because they vary a great deal from practice to practice.
Whatever you cut frees up budget. Whatever needs measuring first should not be switched off too quickly: without a figure per channel, you do not know which euro brings in patients.
